New Zealand Art Raises $153,000 For Charity

New Zealand charities have benefited to the tune of $153,000 as a result of the 2004 Artworks Charity Art Exhibition and Sale held at the Hilton Hotel in August.

The money raised through the event was gifted to five charities including Variety – the Children’s Charity, the Gifted Kids Programme, the Spirit of Adventure Trust, the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research and the Liggins Institute. Artists received $281,000 in total from the sale of their work.

Artworks Charity Art Exhibition and Sale has become, in just three years, one of Auckland’s most successful fundraising events. It is the largest art event of its kind in Australasia and this year more than 3,400 visitors viewed the 640 pieces of art that were on display, many of which were purchased for private or corporate collections.

Artworks chairman, Matthew Adams, said this year’s event once again fulfilled all the objectives of the organizers.

“Artworks is an opportunity to invest in our country’s future through raising money for our five chosen charities who are all focused in varying ways on improving future prospects for young New Zealanders,” said Mr Adams.

“At the same time it is a celebration of New Zealand art and artists, and an opportunity for both established and up and coming artists to showcase their talent and in some instances secure the first sale of their work. For the New Zealand public it is an opportunity to view and purchase a wide variety of local art under the one roof.”

Artworks is an annual event organised by the Rotary Club of Ellerslie Sunrise.
