Swim An Exercise In Remote Intimacy
The experimental cyberformance "swim – an exercise in remote intimacy" is to be presented for the first time in New Zealand during the 2005 Fringe Festival.

Performed live via the internet, "swim" dives into the delights and dilemmas of intimacy without physical proximity. Immersive images, splashy flirtations and deep encounters between fleshy cyberbodies are conjured up by a troupe of globally dispersed cyberformers, Avatar Body Collision.
On stage, Helen Varley Jamieson connects through the ether to Vicki Smith (Aotearoa/NZ), Karla Ptacek (London) and Leena Saarinen (Helsinki). The tools of cyber-dating – webcams, email, chat – are creatively redeployed to devise and perform "swim".
Since its premier at Medi@terra Festival, Athens, in 2002, "swim" has been performed at festivals around the world; finally, New Zealand audiences have an opportunity to experience its magic.

The members of Avatar Body Collision have backgrounds in theatre, digital medial and visual art, and have been experimenting with live performance on the internet for several years, working together since 2001. They were part of the group that presented "the[abc]experiment" at the 2002 NZ Fringe Festival. Following this, they formed Avatar Body Collision and have created and performed a five shows, of which "swim" was the second.
"swim" illustrates the evolution of cyberformance since "the[abc]experiment": the introduction of web cams, a close integration of form and content, and further development of the techniques and concept. Now, new work is being created for purely online audiences using purpose-built software UpStage.
