Filmic Space: Reverie and Matter

We cannot stand in the same river twice, but in this video installation by Ying Wang, the dreams of water repeat. Designer Ying Wang works as a ‘director’ of the gallery environment: manipulating digital water (her virtual performer) and the visiting public (her passive performers) within the ‘filmic’ space that she constructs.

“Filmic Space: Reverie and Matter” is an immersive and interactive experience, that uses water as a metaphor for human emotions. The ‘Reveries’ are the projections that interact with ‘Matter’: the physical space of the gallery, and the bodies of the visitors. Completing the cycle, interactive displays record and replay these visitors through live video.

This exhibition has been designed and created by Chinese born Ying Wang, who has taken up academic study after four years of professional practise in China: designing the interior of large public buildings for banks, restaurants, hospitals and post offices.

This project marks her move into ‘filmic’ space and the gallery environment, where narrow and dim conditions provide a setting for her ‘filmic’ narrative. Ying is finishing her Master in Design at Massey University where her study deals with the emotions and spatial design.
