Angela Lewis Signature Collection Hits the Mark

Angela Lewis Signature Collection Hits the Mark

The Angela Lewis signature collection, shown for the first time last week at the Anna Bibby Gallery, Auckland, has won immediate acclaim for its luxurious fabrics, clever and complex patterns and feminine appeal.

Angela Lewis showed both her experience and creativity in the collection which was inspired by Grecian themes and entitled, "Urban Goddess".

The launch is a first for Lewis who, while being very well known and respected in the industry has never put her own name on a collection. She says she found this challenging, but also empowering. "It allowed me to put my own passion, my own self into the garments in a way I haven’t been able to in the past," she said.

Retailers who flew in from around the country praised the collection, including an Australian distributor who came to Auckland especially for the viewing. "The buyers couldn't have been more encouraging," Lewis said. "I am absolutely over the moon with the response."

With strong sales already within New Zealand, the range heads to Australia next week to complete what has so far been a dream start for the new label.

New Name, New Brand, New Vision for Angela Lewis

When Angela Lewis sends her models out on the catwalk to show her new collection tonight, it will mark a watershed in both her personal life as well as her career.

Lewis says that while she has never put herself forward as the creative figurehead of her company, with her Angela Lewis Summer 05 collection she will be speaking out from a creative perspective for the first time.

It is a subtle change, but an important one. Her career in fashion, spanning more than 20 years, has been heavily slanted towards behind-the-scenes business, but Lewis says she now is in a position to free her creative side and design a range that reflects her own passion.

"Everything in life is about timing," Lewis says. "The way my business is structured now I’ve realised I can actually do this, but it has taken me a long time to build to this."

For her first signature collection, Angela Lewis looks to her past for inspiration.

Holding a fascination for all things Grecian, Angela is reliving the grace of the ancient world with her goddess-like looks with clever draping, soft lines and intricate details, updated for the modern woman.

Lewis's inspiration is drawn from her first visit to Greece with her parents when in her mid- twenties.

"In this collection, everything of that wonderful trip has come back in full force and I have just been loving being back there," she said.

Her company Lewis Design now employs 25 people and garments are sold throughout Australasia. It also runs retail outlets Saga, in Auckland’s Chancery and The Atrium.

The Angela Lewis Launch is to be held on April 5th at the Anna Bibby Gallery, Morgan St, Newmarket, Auckland at 6:00pm.
