Minister Of Broadcasting Sympathetic To Changing Watershed Time

Moves to make the “AO” time on television later than 8.30pm have gained the sympathetic ear of the Broadcasting Minister.

The viewers organisation, Viewers for Television Excellence Inc. (VoTE), is seeking to have the ‘watershed’ pushed back to 9.30pm, as research by the Broadcasting Standards Authority shows many young children in New Zealand are still watching TV well after 8.30 at night.

“Family safe viewing needs to be extended to take this into account, and provide protection for our children,” says VoTE secretary, Glenyss Barker.

The AO campaign was launched by VoTE at a “Spotlight on TV” meeting at Avalon Television Centre. The meeting was attended by MPs and spokespersons for the Labour Party, National, United Future, the Greens, New Zealand First, Act and Destiny.

Minister Steve Maharey told the meeting that he was sympathetic to changing the ‘AO’ time on Television to later than 8.30pm.
