The best of our best musical talent strides the red carpet to glory – or not – as The Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards cranks up the volume on October 5.

Kiwi musicians will be honoured at the 40th annual showcase at The 2005 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards on Wednesday October 5 in Auckland the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ) has announced.

And for the first time in recent years general admission tickets are part of this year’s awards with the organisers managing to pry a few eagerly sought-after seats from the Kiwi music glitterati.

Sponsors and radio stations have been allocated nearly 1,000 seats for promotions and giveaways.

“It’s New Zealand music’s biggest night and has become a fantastic event over the last few years. We thought that the 40th anniversary was a timely opportunity to open the event to more members of the public,” RIANZ chief executive Campbell Smith says.

Last year the fans turned out in their legions to welcome New Zealand’s music royalty arriving at the square in stretched limos for the awards night.

With this year’s Tuis again being handed out in Auckland’s Aotea Centre – THE EDGE®, the hugely popular Oscar-like red carpet arrival rolls out again.

And music fans who can’t make it to Auckland for the big night get their own earful and eyeful on free-to-air TV again this year.

CanWest’s C4 gets right behind the awards again in 2005 with its very own “music superbowl” broadcast of an hour-and-a-half highlights package in prime time the night after the event. Plus there’s a repeat on TV3 on the following Saturday (October 8).

The awards get huge radio support from the CanWest stable including Channel Z, The Edge, The Rock and More FM.

There are a few changes too for The 2005 Vodafone New Zealand Music awards themselves with the new Aotearoa Roots category honouring dub, reggae and roots music.

The line-up of Tuis for the 2005 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards on Wednesday October 5 in Auckland includes:

Best Dance/Electronica Album
Best Aotearoa Roots Album
C4 Best Music Video.
Best Classical Album
Vodafone People’s Choice Award
International Achievement Award
Outstanding Contribution Award

The Best Producer, Best Engineer and Best Album Cover technical awards are to be presented at the Finalists’ Announcement and Technical Awards at the Hilton Auckland on September 2. Finalists for these three awards will be announced next week.

Other Tui awards presented during the year to receive recognition at the awards ceremony on October 5 include Best Folk Album, Best Jazz Album, Best Country Music Album and Best Pacific Music Album.

No awards are being presented for the Best Mäori and Best Gospel / Christian categories as insufficient entries were received in 2005.

About the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards: The Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards are presented by the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ) and are held annually to celebrate the achievements of New Zealand musicians. 2005 is the 40th anniversary of the awards and television audiences will see delayed broadcasts on C4 and TV3.

The Country, Folk, Pacific and Jazz music album awards are presented at functions organised by the relevant industry associations and the technical awards at a separate function at which the main award finalists are announced.
