Bloody Great Time At The Bleedingslow

PRESS RELEASE GOOD BASTARDS RUGBY CLUB 22/8/05

Bloody Great Time At The Bleedingslow

The Inaugural Bleedingslow Cup has been won by New Zealand in a hilarious match played on the Gold Coast at the weekend.

It was sponsored by Pacific Blue, the Budget airline carrier to Australia and Fiji

It is an innovation of the Good Bastards Rugby Club and involved a weekend of Larrikin activities and Rugby with teams from Australian and New Zealand for those aged over thirty five and can’t get Rugby out of their system.

While there were a number of actual games played over the weekend along with social functions, the highlight was the playing of the Bleedingslow Cup.

It was very different to say the least and certainly expressed the spirit of larrikinism which is the underlying theme upon which Good Bastards is based.

Two teams were selected at the evening function held at the spectacular function centre of Queensland’s leading club The Southport Sharks.

The Kiwi team was aptly called “The All Blahs” while the Aussie team was “The Wobbly Knees”

The game was played amid a lot of drinking, humour and laughing and was complimented with the top Irish band Wilkes and Hansen.

Points were scored by the various members from each team being played off in larrikin activities, the conversion was based on the kicker having 45 seconds to spin a yarn and if the crowd responded sufficiently and additional two points were added.

Organiser Paddy Sweeney said Good Bastards Rugby is more about the after match function than the game and providing tournaments that everyone can afford to attend.

“The base cost of this tournament for 6 days was under $600.00 per person including airfares across the Tasman, accommodation and all functions.”

“Principle Sponsors International air carrier Pacific Blue has made a huge impact on the event, many prize-winners flew free courtesy of Pacific Blue.” said Sweeney.

The event is being played each year on the Gold Coast one week either side of the Bledislow Cup.

The Good Bastards Rugby Club has a web site www.goodbastards.com which keeps members and the general public informed of their larrikin activities.
