Extreme Sports Legend To Compete At Cardrona

Extreme sports legend Shaun Palmer (USA) will take to Cardrona Alpine Resort’s Snowboarder-X course tomorrow along with athletes from 10 different countries as part of the World FIS Series Snowboarder-X circuit.

The race, which is part of the New Zealand Snowboard Nationals, will allow competitors to accumulate points towards Olympic qualification. New Zealand’s Olympic hopefuls, Richard Hunt and Phil Dominic, together with Juliane Bray, who has already qualified, will compete, using the event as a points earning exercise as well as good training for the next World Cup event in Chile next week.

Palmer who has been X Games champion many times over, not just in snowboarding but also skiing and motocross, puts his name to a PlayStation 2 game as well as his own range of snowboards, ridden by some of the world’s best. He has also been World Mountain Bike Champion and he has been voted NEA Extreme Sports Athlete of the Year, ESPN Action Sports Athlete of the Year and USA Today voted him the ‘World’s Greatest Athlete’.

“Shaun Palmer is huge in the world of extreme sports,” said New Zealand Snowboard Association executive director, Graham Dunbar. “Competitors in the Nationals will be blown away to be riding with the best of the best – it’s great inspiration for them and great for New Zealand snowboarding to have athletes such as Shaun competing here.”
