Awards Evening for Manukau Vessel And Sculpture Exhibition

The eighth Manukau Vessel and Sculpture Exhibition awards ceremony will be held on Friday 4 November at 6pm at the historic Nathan Homestead in Manurewa, officiated by the Mayor of Manukau Sir Barry Curtis.

This major national exhibition featuring works from emerging and established artists from around New Zealand will run until the 24 November.

Manukau City Council’s Arts Team Leader, Leisa Siteine says, “This prestigious exhibition raises the profile of arts in the city, as well as supporting artists both locally and nationally.

“Selected work will be displayed in the gallery of the Homestead with larger scale sculptures displayed in the picturesque grounds.

“The premier award is $2,500, 2nd prize $1,000, 3rd prize $750 and merit awards of $750 will be awarded at the selectors discretion.”

This year’s guest artist will be Noelle Jakeman, a sculptor with a strong background in Maori art and design. A graduate of the renowned Toihoukura (Maori Visual Arts) programme at Tairawhiri Polytechnic in Gisborne, Ms Jakeman recently completed an arts residency in Tucson Arizona and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Guest selector this year will be Brett Graham one of New Zealand’s most accomplished sculptors, highly regarded for his ability to abstract complex historical ideas into formally strong and beautiful sculptural form. Graham's work engages in a dual dialogue of Maori and European histories with predominant use of wood and stone. His work is featured in most major New Zealand collections - one piece is situated behind Parliament.
