Cardrona Gets More Snow For 2006
Cardrona Alpine Resort is investing $2 million in snowmaking to supplement its already high natural snow base, state-of-the art grooming equipment and five new on-mountain apartments for 2006.
Currently going through a resource consent process for the reservoir needed to operate snowmaking, the ski area believes this investment will set a new standard of snow conditions in Australasia.
“Although we usually have bountiful amounts of natural snow, we will be installing the latest snowmaking technology to ensure key trails, rails, jumps and half pipes open at both the start and end of the season,” said marketing manager, Bruce McGechan.
The first stage of the snowmaking project will cover the Sluice Box and All Nations trails on Whitestar, the racecourse, the 800m terrain park, four half pipes and learner’s areas. Skier and boarders can expect excellent snow conditions throughout the season by having snowmaking added to the natural base. It is expected the snowmaking will be operational in time for the 2006 season.
Cardrona’s second investment for the 2006 season is the addition of a winch cat groomer to its already substantial groomer fleet. The winch cat does less damage to the snow base than traditional groomers resulting in a smoother finish on steeper slopes and rollovers, subsequently improving skiing and snowboarding conditions.
Thirdly, five new apartments are going into the base facility providing even more opportunity for visitors to stay on the snow. Cardrona season passes will go on sale early next year.
