Trusts Stadium & Waitakere to host Queen’s Baton

The Trusts Stadium and Waitakere City Council to host Queen’s Baton Relay…

The Trusts Stadium and Waitakere City Council have been chosen as a host for the Queen’s Baton Relay as it makes its way to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

The Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton Relay will be the longest relay in history, travelling across the globe for one year and one day. It will visit all 71 nations of the Commonwealth, home to one third of the world’s population.

The Queen’s Baton Relay forms a significant part of the lead up to the Commonwealth Games, representing everything the Games stands for: community, celebration and unity.

The Trusts Stadium Chief Executive Simon Wickham is excited by the prospect of the Baton’s arrival.

“This is a hugely important aspect of the Commonwealth Games. We are looking to get as many people in Waitakere City as possible involved in the relay.”

“The Commonwealth Games play a very important role in New Zealand sport and we know how much participating in the Games means to New Zealanders. We're delighted that the New Zealand Olympic Committee allowed us to share some of the Games magic with the many young people in Waitakere City that frequent our Stadium. It's great that together with the support of Waitakere City Council that we will be able to host this event in Waitakere.”

This is a very rare opportunity for members of the public to run on the recently completed Douglas Track and Field with some of New Zealand and the World’s top athletes such as Commonwealth Double Gold Medallist Beatrice Faumuina, Triathlete Bevan Docherty, Blackstick Honor Dillon, the New Zealand Breakers and many more.

The New Zealand leg of the Queens Baton Relay is organised by the New Zealand Olympic Committee and presented by the Southern Trust.

The Trusts Stadium will host the Queen’s Baton Relay on Monday the 23rd January from 1.15pm on the Douglas Track and Field.
