Rebel Banana Roseanne returns

Banana in a Nutshell, directed by first-generation Chinese New Zealander Roseanne Liang, returns by popular demand to Auckland and Wellington for a strictly limited season in February.

Narrated in self-confessional style and through a series of family interviews, the ground-breaking documentary explores the experiences of Liang and her navigations through rough waters to get a blessing from her traditional Chinese parents to marry a Pakeha Kiwi.

A standout feature which played to packed houses at the Telecom New Zealand International Film Festivals 2005 and DOCNZ Festival, the title of the film refers to someone of Asian descent who has grown up in Western society - “yellow on the outside, white on the inside”.

The doco releases as New Zealand’s Chinese communities prepare for their own New Year celebrations. “It’s totally appropriate that the general release of BiaN coincides with Chinese New Year. It’s a special time of the year for our communities – a time which brings fresh opportunities, awakenings and change. If this doco forces people to look at things anew and stand up for who they are and what they represent, then it has served its purpose”, says Liang, SPADA New Filmmaker of the Year 2005.

Banana in a Nutshell has been described as: “…a monument to love. This documentary doesn’t just charm, it uses charm”, “If you see one film at this year’s [2005] International Film Festival, make it Banana in a Nutshell”.

Banana in a Nutshell screens in Auckland as part of Rialto Cinemas’ programme of New Zealand Film www.rialto.co.nz and in Wellington at the Paramount www.paramount.co.nz. Screening times are online. The public is encouraged to purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment.
