Corrupt Productions presents 'scape

26 January 2005

Corrupt Productions presents ( ) scape

Everybody Shows Its Own Tale

A new dance work that draws on individual cultures to create a rich scape of mind and matter.

Choreographer Julia Milsom and composer Andrew McMillan challenge expectations of dance, combining movement, opera, theatre and original music; to create a magical picture book of individual culture.

( ) scape offers an escape from the boundaries of the real world. Beautiful, evocative, witty and abstract images offer audiences a stimulating experience, free from the pressure if intellectualization or analysis.

Milsom has been developing ( ) scape for the past six months whilst juggling a busy schedule of making her latest dance film Framed, choreographing and dancing for some of New Zealand’s most renowned dance companies. This year she has toured nationally with Raewyn Hill’s Angels with Dirty Feet and Malia Johnston’s Miniatures. Since graduating from UNITEC in 2003 she’s also worked with Touch Compass, Late Night Choreographers, The Silo Theatre’s A Clockwork Orange, Platform and Vacuum PACT Dance Company.

Milsom has also been picked up by the acclaimed Amsterdam-based collective MAGPIE, who handpick a dozen people from all over the world to join their company. Julia was singled out in a workshop in 2004 and was offered a nine-month apprenticeship. Julia leaves for Holland in 2006.

Co-collaborator Andrew McMillan brings a wealth of experience in music composition and performance to the project. On his return from post-graduate study at Leeds College of Music in the UK, McMillan has balanced a schedule of composing music and sound design for numerous theatre productions; written, produced and performed in the New Pacific Music Ensemble; established Vitamin S and has been a part of the resurgence of the improvised music scene.

Five performers from diverse artistic back-grounds each bring their extraordinary skills to the stage for the premiere of ( ) scape. Corrupt Productions was founded in 2004 by Julia Milsom to break tradition and investigate new ways of presenting dance to new audiences.

Images can shape journeys; they constantly shift and weave, creating our own personal landscapes. These scapes dance across the passages of our lives.
