Press Release: Wellington players represent NZ
Seven
members of the Capital Inline Hockey Club (also known as
“The Penguins”) will represent New Zealand in the Oceania
Inline Hockey Championships to be held in April.
Ben Manu from Tawa and Zach Beardman from Central Wellington were selected for the Under 18s, Mark Roulston from Karori, Mathew Smith from Central Wellington and Lewis Taiapa from Wainuiamata were selected for the Under 20s, while Malcolm Bremner from Kilbirnie and Bevan Varney from Upper Hutt were selected for Senior Men. In addition, Malcolm Bremner has been invited to coach the New Zealand Under 20’s team.
“Our Penguins club is always well represented in international competitions, but we’re particularly proud to have seven members selected this year – that’s two more than last year” says Penguins president Sue Roulston.
Inline Hockey is similar to ice hockey but is played on roller blades. “Anyone who knows how to skate, whether they are male or female, 6 or 60, can enjoy inline hockey” says Sue. “It is fast, fun and competitive, and it is played in an environment that promotes safety, camaraderie and sportsmanship.”
Plans are afoot to further grow the sport this year through a league for schools and by growing the Penguin Club. Anyone interested in inline hockey is invited to the Penguin’s Open Day on Sunday February 26 from 2 – 5pm at the Kilbirnie Rec Centre. There will be exhibition matches, free instruction, games, a prize draw and more. Contact Sue Roulston on 476 7836 or 0274 501 564 for more details.
