Flames race away from Flyers
Silver Ferns defender Vilimaina Davu made a telling contribution in the Ballantynes Canterbury Flames 65-18 win over the More FM Flyers in a sixth round National Bank Cup netball match in Napier tonight.
With stints at both goal defence and goalkeeper during the match, Davu stifled the home team’s scoring opportunities. Shell-shocked after a first quarter onslaught during which the Flames shot out to a 16-5 advantage, the young and inexperienced Flyers never recovered and remained hesitant for the remainder of the match.
The Flames with the intent of keeping their semifinals campaign alive kept up a punishing tempo which was rewarded with a huge 22-3 effort in the third quarter.
The Flyers lost ground trying to get the ball into their attacking third and on the occasions they did get it into their shooting circle, were often thwarted by the ever-present Davu.
Former Silver Ferns captain Julie Seymour was also a strong presence throughout the midcourt for the Flames while shooter Shelley Norris came close to a perfect game with 30 goals from 31 attempts. Hannah Brand came on at wing attack for the Flames in the final quarter for a polished National Bank Cup debut in which the Flames showed superior structure and organisation throughout.
