Lighting up the house and garden for winter

MEDIA RELEASE
19 June 2006

Lighting up the house and garden for the grey days of winter

As the autumn daylight fades to a harsh winter glare the light and colour in our homes becomes all important, and a key focus of the July issue of NZ House & Garden.

The latest issue looks at the possibilities for using window dressings to best effect – controlling light and colour to bring the best out of a room. NZ House & Garden also visits two of the brightest stars in the lighting business – Gary and Kathryn Clinton of Blenheim – and their creative take on ambient lighting.

“Contemplating the effect grey days have on our psyche – and at this time of year we have more than a few to contend with – it seems fitting to focus on the vital role colour and light play in our homes and our lives,” says Michal McKay, editor.

“When you consider our rapport with the environment, now is the time - with shorter days and wintery weather - to ensure our response to our surroundings is kept at optimum level. Creating harmony in your home through these two components is a start but remember that these months are also quite wonderful for indulging in the pleasures unique to the season.”

One of those pleasures is a hearty bowl of soup – the perfect dish to warm up family and friends over the cold days and nights of winter. The latest issue suggests six of the best recipes to try this winter, and offers practical ways to make a soup meal look spectacular for special occasions.

Be the first to see Xanthe White’s award-winning display at the Chelsea Flower Show, London. Xanthe’s talents saw her take home a prized silver gilt award, and Gardens Editor Lynda Hallinan was there to capture the moment and share her impressions with readers. July’s issue has all the photographs hot off the press.

The latest issue also complements items from the NZ House & Garden television series, due to begin screening on TV ONE in July.

The July issue of NZ House & Garden magazine is on sale from Monday June 19 and retails for $8.95.
