Auckland girl, Ranfurly boy, on borrowed gear, win McKenzie national ski scholarships

A ten-year old Auckland girl who learned to ski in Auckland last year and a Ranfurly boy who skied in borrowed gear have earned national ski scholarship after the second series of Mapei races at Treble Cone.

Auckland’s Sophie Corser, who only learned to ski at Snowplanet in Auckland in April last year, skied for Kristen School into third place in her age group event.

Nick Pascoe, 11, from Loganburn Station, Paerau near Ranfurly, skied his way to a Mapei Snowvision scholarship on borrowed gear.

Corser is in involved in swimming, hockey and cross country at representative level and Pascoe is a rugby rep.

The Treble Cone series attracted 109 young skiers, the biggest ever field in the series.

Earlier this month, Eliza Grigg, nine, a great grand-daughter of 1928 All Blacks captain Maurice Brownlee, and Jake McConnell, eight, of Methven received scholarships after the opening races at Mt Hutt.

Snowvision this year revived the McKenzie ski scholarships to help promising young NZ skiers.
