Kong is gone. Gorilla is back.

Gorilla Theatre, the hit improvised comedy show from the 2004 International Comedy Festival is back. The show that TV3’s Nightline called “edge-of-your-seat comedy” will be held Tuesday 8 – Saturday 12 August at the McKenzie Theatre, Capital E, Wellington.

“It’s a show worthy of the Oscars,” says the Wellington Improvisation Troupe’s show producer, Simon Smith. “Each night, four improvisers will take turns to direct each other to create stories, scenes and songs that range from tear-jerking to side-splitting. Or combinations of both.”

Performers have to make everything up on the spot – which is just the kind of special effects the Oscars love.

“With law of the jungle competitiveness, players direct scenes to entertain the audience, who then decide if each scene was successful or not” explains Smith. “A kill or be pelted with rotten bananas kind of thing. Ultimately, the audience chooses which director gets to win the right to walk away with the troupe’s resident Gorilla at the end of the show.”

The Wellington Improvisation Troupe (WIT) is the team that brought shows to Wellington such as Micetro (Fringe 2003, 2006), Love Possibly (Comedy Festival 2005) and the highly innovative All New Old Time Radio Show in January this year.
