Young musicians on the road

Since January 2005 Victoria University and Massey University have been operating the joint New Zealand School of Music (NZSM), a centre of musical excellence. Now the students in the orchestral studies course are reaching out to the greater Wellington region by performing high-quality, affordable concerts in the Wellington CBD and on the Kapiti Coast.

The performances by New Zealand School of Music Orchestra involve a number of students and one of New Zealand’s leading conductors, Kenneth Young. The repertoire has a decidedly New Zealand flavour, featuring Lilburn’s Suite for Orchestra. It includes masterworks of the orchestral canon and new works by young New Zealand composers.

A highlight of the performances will be the premieres of orchestral works by the recipients of this year’s prizes in composition: Hermione Johnson, the Jenny McLeod prize winner; and Alexandra Hay, the David Farquhar prize winner.

Professor Elizabeth Hudson, Director of the New Zealand School of Music is enthusiastic about the performances.

“The New Zealand School of Music Orchestra, conducted by Kenneth Young, is offering a terrific program that will showcase our talented classical performance students, as well as offer the opportunity to hear some new works from our outstanding composition program.

“We hope the public will take advantage of this unique opportunity to see the school’s young talent in action in such diverse repertoire.”

Performances will be held on Thursday 18 August at 7.30pm at St. Andrews on the Terrace and Friday 19 August at 7.30pm at St. Paul’s in Paraparaumu. Tickets are available at the door and cost $10-$15 each. These performances are part of an ongoing series of events organised by the NZSM.
