PRESS RELEASE – 26/9/06
Don Brash to Visit Basecamp Wanaka this Weekend
National Party leader Don Brash will pay a visit to BaseCamp Wanaka this Saturday, a week before the Oceania Sportclimbing Championships take place.
From 11am to 11.45am, Dr Brash will be accompanied by BaseCamp directors, who will show him around the world-class facility and what it has to offer for indoor climbers and tourists alike.
BaseCamp director Toby Johnston said he was pleased Dr Brash could take the time to visit the facility, which is still being built.
BaseCamp hosts the Oceania Sportclimbing Championships and the New Zealand National Championships from October 6-8. The competition will feature more than 120 climbers from throughout New Zealand and Australia. Each country’s top seven female and male open-ranked climbers, selected by their respective sportclimbing federations, will compete for the Oceania Cup. The male and female winners of the cup gain access to compete in next year’s world championship event.
BaseCamp’s grand opening will take place on November 18-19, when the rest of the centre, including the training rooms, micro brewery, café and retail shop, will be completed.
