MIT’s slice of heaven wins bronze at Ellerslie

The first entry by Manukau Institute of Technology horticulture students at the Ellerslie International Flower Show has won a Bronze Award in the Design Marquee category this week.

Entitled “Slice of Heaven”, the garden design by a team of seven Diploma in Landscaping students is based on the swampland and scrub environment of well-known Kiwi cartoonist Murray Ball’s animated classic Footrot Flats.

This is the first time a class from MIT’s School of Horticulture has entered the internationally-renowned show, which runs from 15 November to 19 November.

The team consisted of Sarah Harvey and Nick Dodd of Whitford, Sue Makepeace of Mangare East, Tanya Groenewegen of Bucklands Beach, Yenny Meldgaard of Maraetai, Haiguang Jim Zheng of Howick and Jinsong (Ailsa) Zou of Papatoetoe.

MIT landscape programme leader Elle Anderson, a Hunua resident, was project coordinator.

In spite of missing out on the top prize, Elle says the success of the garden reflects the calibre of the group of students. “We’re tremendously proud of what they have achieved through the design of the garden, particularly as this is their entry to the show.”
