Young paddlers gear up for Waka Ama nationals at Whakatane event.
Up to 250 young people from Midget age through to J19 are expected to take part in the Mataatua Rangatahi Waka Ama Regatta Saturday 9 December 2006.
The event, involving paddlers from Rotorua, Tauranga and the Eastern Bay is being held on the Rangitaiki River, Thornton. There is no registration fee for the regatta, organised by the Mataatua Waka Ama Committee and hosted by the Waka Ama o Rangitaiki Club.
"It's all about participation and having fun. The regatta is a great opportunity for our young paddlers to compete in preparation for the national competition on Lake Karapiro from 15 - 20 January 2007," says Mataatua Waka Ama Committee spokesperson Tui Edwards. "Waka Ama is an excellent sport for everyone, I'd encourage people of all ages and abilities to give it a go."
Tui Edwards says there are spot prizes up for grabs. Registrations close Monday 4th December.
