Lucknow, India

Upon the recommendation of seven member jury, Mr Jagdish Gandhi, President of World Movement for Global Democracy (WMGD) announced the result World Peace Film and Music Awards 2006 today at City Montessori School (CMS), Lucknow, India

The nominations for the awards were received for the World Peace Film and Music Festival 2006 that was organized by the World Movement for Global Democracy (WMGD) during the 3rd Global Symposium: ‘Towards a new world civilization’ and 7th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World from 8 to 11 December 2006 organized by City Montessori School, Lucknow, India.

The film ‘Teaching Peace in a Time of War’ by Triad Teaching Peace Productions and the National Film Board of Canada, Canada was awarded the $500 cash prize as the best film among all the entries received for the World Peace Film Award.

Teaching Peace in a Time of War introduces us to the students and teachers at Vasa Pelagic School in Belgrade, Serbia. The students include Nenad, whose father is institutionalized for killing his mother, and Emil, who is terrorized for being a Muslim. Their classmate, Aleksandra, whose father admits that he enjoyed the war, says, Peace means nothing to me, because I don't have any peace. A decade of civil war cost the lives of more than 250,000 people in the former Yugoslavia. The children of this region have been irrevocably afflicted by this violence.

“History books have taught us that we can't create peace by imposing it; I think it can only be achieved by education. And what better place to start than in the early years of a child's life?” says Hetty van Gurp, founder of Peaceful Schools International who is also featured in the film.
