Weet-Bix Tryathlon Heading to Auckland

-Less than two weeks left to register for world’s largest sporting event for kids-

Budding Auckland triathletes aged 8-15 years need to get in quick to register for the Weet-Bix Tryathlon to be held at St Heliers in Auckland on Sunday 18 February 2007.

The WEET-BIX Tryathlon is the world’s largest sporting event for children and encourages Kiwi kids to lead healthy, active lives. The 2007 series signals the 15th anniversary of this iconic sporting event.

Tanne Andrews, WEET-BIX senior brand manager, says the WEET-BIX Tryathlon events grow in popularity year on year and the 15th anniversary series is expected to be bigger than ever.

“Over the past 15 years more than 100,000 New Zealand children have taken part in a WEET-BIX Tryathlon event. Last year there were more than 15,000 participants and we are expecting the 2007 series to grow to approximately 20,000 participants.

““There is less than two weeks left for kids to register for this great event, so Auckland kids need to be quick to avoid disappointment.”

The St Heliers event will be held at Vellenoweth Green, St Heliers Bay Beach on Sunday 18 February 2007. There are seven other events in the series: Hamilton, Tauranga, Mosgiel, Nelson, Christchurch, Wellington and North Shore.

Olympic gold medalist Hamish Carter, the WEET-BIX Tryathlon ambassador says: “The WEET-BIX Tryathlon provides a fantastic opportunity for kids in Auckland. Events such as this help develop the triathletes of tomorrow.

“I enjoy being a part of the WEET-BIX Tryathlon series because the kids are so happy when they’ve finished. Just by giving a triathlon a go means they’ve got something to be very proud of - it’s a huge accomplishment.”

The WEET-BIX Tryathlon provides the perfect starting block for New Zealand’s future world champions. Many of today’s top New Zealand triathletes, including Debbie Tanner and Andrea Hewitt, started their triathlon career with the WEET-BIX Tryathlon.

The WEET-BIX Tryathlon is suitable for children of all levels of sporting ability as it focuses on encouraging kids to participate, have fun and do their best. Kids can enter as individuals, in a team of two or three, or as a family.

Every participant in the WEET-BIX Tryathlon is a winner, and every child who takes part receives a medal, a WEET-BIX Tryathlon t-shirt, a swim cap and a certificate recognising their achievement.
