Catch the Bass in the Basin
SANDWICHES SUMMERSET is the ultimate day/nighter to pull the stumps on daylight savings, hitting out with seven hours of extremely fine live music, world-class hospitality, class on grass and a picket fence at Wellington’s BASIN RESERVE.

Heading the lineup is Wellington’s own Fat Freddy’s Drop, batting alongside New Zealand heavyweights Shapeshifter, Ladi6 and Parks and Downtown Brown and the Sunshine Sound System. They are joined by two international acts live and direct from the UK - Tom Middleton and Black Grass! Capping off the team are two of the country’s fittest MCs KPz (Killa Puha) and P Digsss, guaranteed to keep the players in check.

Ticket numbers for Sandwiches SummerSet are limited to 5000 and the entire Basin Reserve will be fully licensed for the occasion. The ‘Heineken Greenspace’ - featuring table service from Heineken Helpers, the best views of stage, comfort and shade – provides you with a world-class box seat at this event.

With its central city location, Historic Places Trust status and age, the Basin is New Zealand’s most famous cricket ground. Opened as Wellington's official cricket ground on December 11 1866, the Basin was constructed on a former lake known as the Basin Lake, on land uplifted by a major earthquake in 1855.

The idea of transforming Wellington’s legendary cricket ground into a boutique festival site to see out the close of daylight savings is the gameplan of Sandwiches, awarded Night Club of the Year at the inaugural 2006 New Zealand Bar Awards.

The aim is to make SummerSet an annual Wellington event. Says Sandwiches Entertainment Director Bryce Mason: “It’s all about world class music and hospitality, and keeping our eye on the ball!”

THE PLAYERS

Fat Freddy’s Drop
Led by Captain Fitchie, this team of prime players is at their peak. Since dropping the 7x platinum album Based On A True Story, they have spent more time playing internationally than on home grounds. With the recording of a highly-anticipated second album now the focus, they’re getting out of the studio for their only Wellington performance this summer.

Tom Middleton (UK)
Tom Middleton is a world class British player, who first found form as a classically trained pianist and cellist. Today he draws critical acclaim as a Recording Artist, Producer, Remixer, DJ and Presenter. Formerly of the Jedi Knights, Middleton plays under many aliases including Cosmos and Amba,. His eclectic style fuses techno, drum’n’ bass and chillout, resulting in an aural feast. Remix games include Röyksopp, Gotan Project, Lamb and Jamiroquai.

Shapeshifter
With their sonically riveting delivery and quick pace on attack, this team is always entertaining. Cup holders of Best Live Act, Song of the Year and Album of the Year at the 2006 b-Net NZ Music Awards, and fresh off the back of headlining the Australasian Big Day Out Tour, the Shifters are guaranteed to smash the Basin for six.

Black Grass (UK)
Storming the Basin pitch, Black Grass aka Mex, is a bona fide hip hop master, deftly joining the dots between funk, soul, head nodding rhythms and big party beats. A DJ and vinyl junkie in every sense, the Brighton based artist has played with the likes of Jurassic Five, Public Enemy and Grandmaster Flash. Following his self-titled debut LP in 2004, Black Grass recently released second album A Hundred Days In One (2006), which features vocalists Blu Rum 13, Micall Parknsun & Okou.

Rated widely as the country’s premier female vocalist and MC, Ladi6 has graced the likes of likes of Fat Freddy’s Drop, Shapeshifter, Scribe, OpenSouls and 50hz with her shimmering vocals. Ladi, alongside DJ/guitarist Parks, is currently busy applying the final polish to her debut album, produced by Fat Freddy’s own DJ Fitchie. Expect the star pair to hit out in all directions.
