Check it out mate!

Knights, bishops and rooks; queens, kings and pawns… they’re all on the shopping list at Westfield Pakuranga this weekend (March 31, April 1) in a novel community chess tournament and exhibition.

In addition to a school tournament, there’s a range of chess activities suited to youngsters and grown-ups alike.

New Zealand chess coach Ewen Green takes on all-comers in simultaneous games during two Saturday sessions. On the Sunday, shoppers get to compete against rated players in a five round tournament with more than $2,000 in prizes.

It’s all part of a ChessNuts promotion to raise interest in the global game played by an estimated 605 million people [1] world-wide.

Saturday shoppers will also be able to play a game with giant chess pieces while on the Sunday there’ll be age group tournaments with Westfield vouchers as prizes.

Westfield Pakuranga centre manager Jacque Ryan says there’ll also be lots of experienced chess people to help with advice and information on chess matters. The entry fee for Sunday’s tournament is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Prizes are presented in the form of Westfield cash vouchers of up to $300.

Registration is at the Customer Services Desk at Westfield Pakuranga.
