The latest book by Ranginui Walker, Opotiki-Mai-Tawhiti, Capital of Whakatohea, is being launched at Omarumutu Marae by Te Ururoa Flavell, Maori Party MP, tomorrow.
The book is Emeritus Professor Walker’s sixth book publication and looks into his iwi, Whakatohea, in Opotiki.
Emeritus Professor Walker was a professor at The University of Auckland for over ten years where he published extensively in Maori literature, history, culture and politics.
Professor Linda Smith, Joint Director of Nga Pae o te Maramatanga, the Maori Centre of Research Excellence, says, “Ranginui’s new book is a great addition to Maori literature and to the history of his tribe, Whakatohea.
“His contribution to Maori research continues to inspire all new and upcoming Maori researchers.”
Recently, he was awarded the Tohu o te Maramatanga Award for Research Excellence from Nga Pae o te Maramatanga along with Distinguished Professor Hirini Moko Mead and the late Emeritus Professors Bruce Biggs and Sir Hugh Kawharu.
The launch is proudly supported by the Whakatohea Maori Trust Board and Nga Pae o te Maramatanga.
