Podium Finish for Injured Hartley
Seventeen year old Red Bull Junior Team driver Brendon Hartley still holds second place overall in the Formula Renault Italian Championship after racing held over the weekend at Vallelunga in Italy.
Still recovering from a broken finger and despite driving in a specially made cast and fireproof glove, Brendon qualified 5th and 7th respectively in races on Saturday and Sunday, out of a huge field of 37 cars.
Race 1 saw the New Zealander drive through the field to finish a superb second place while a three car pile-up in front quashed Brendon’s chances of another podium finish in Race 2. Brendon ended up upside down in the gravel trap after being catapulted off the track by one of the cars involved in the pile-up. Fortunately, the teenager climbed from the car unhurt.
Hartley says it was another long, hard weekend with the injury still restricting his left hand turns.
Brendon now has a three week break until his next meeting in Spa, Belgium, and is confident he will again lead the field once full hand movement is restored.
