Living Room series complete
If you're walking through Auckland's CBD at night over the next few weeks, keep one eye on the sky as you may be lucky enough to come across the latest Living Room installation.
Sam Morrison's Whisper-ma-Phones is the final piece to be put in place in Auckland City Council's Living Room 2007 - a series of eight visual and performing installations appearing around the central city.
Whisper-ma-Phones consists of five devices mounted to streetlamps on Elliott Street, Customs Street, the corner of Kitchener and Wellesley streets, the corner of Commerce and Galway streets, and the corner of Queen and Tyler streets (near the Britomart entrance).
When certain streetlights come on, curious passers-by will be rewarded as the Whisper-ma-Phones are brought to life with music and light, each one giving a unique performance.
"My work focuses on sound, interactivity, performance and the use of everyday materials," explains Mr Morrison
"Movement within a certain vicinity of the Whisper-ma-Phones will be detected by a sensor which activates sound and light at night."
The Living Room series is funded by the CBD targeted rate and is one of many projects that form a 10-year action plan to enhance the urban environment and support the vitality and attractiveness of the CBD.
