Art to inform our future Presented by Sophie Jerram
In March 2007 Sophie Jerram exhibited Oil on Troubled Water, a video work and installation at Wellington's Enjoy Public Art Gallery.
The video work mixes footage from New Zealand and Los Angeles with borrowed clips from historic film and television featuring stories of crude oil discovery and wealth.
In making her work, Sophie Jerram wanted to marry her concerns around the sustainability of our natural resources, (including future concerns over water) with cultural sympathies generated by oil industry-fuelled glamour.
She will show the film and talk about this and the work of three other contemporary artists working to examine and expose the contradictions and tensions present in discussing sustainability.
Sophie Jerram will present the artistic process as a vehicle for discussing, broadening and making visible the complex arguments in futures thinking, today.
Sophie Jerram is a Wellington-based writer, curator and film-maker. She also works for the Sustainable Business Network, a membership group established to broaden the focus of business to include social and environmental outcomes.
