Judy Bailey and Trevor Mallard team up to support baby exercise initiative
An event to highlight an
innovative book that explains the link between early
exercise and brain development is being held on June
22.
Sophie Foster and Jerome Hartigan’s Move Baby Move (published by Random House) shows parents and caregivers how to provide movement opportunities for their babies and preschoolers in order to nurture self-esteem and develop healthy exercise and learning patterns for life.
The book has a forward by leading American paediatrician Dr. Bruce Perry, and it’s Dr. Perry’s involvement that has prompted Judy Bailey to accept the invitation to be a guest speaker.
Bailey is a trustee of the Brainwave Trust, launched in 1996 to disseminate Perry’s groundbreaking research into infant brain development which shows the crucial importance of the first few years in setting up neural pathways. Infants raised in safe, nurturing environments with well-informed caregivers grow into happy, healthy, confident, well-balanced and humane citizens. A % of royalties from the book are being donated to Dr. Perry's foundation for research into child abuse and trauma.
Keynote speaker, The Hon Trevor Mallard, Minister for Sport and Recreation, acknowledges Dr. Perry’s work and recognizes the link between physical activity and learning: "What we have learned from some quite recent research is that if you keep kids moving... they stimulate neural pathways in the brain. Those neural pathways are important for learning."
