Gingerbread Men Perform Haka

Gingerbread Men Perform Haka to Issue Challenge to Kiwi Bakeries

An animated video featuring a group of gingerbread men performing the haka has proved popular with kiwi and international viewers, with nearly 10,000 people tuning in to view the clip in one week.

The video, which is hosted at www.bakeryoftheyear.co.nz, was developed for the Baking Industry of New Zealand (BIANZ) to issue a challenge to bakeries across the country to enter the New Zealand Bakery of the Year competition. The competition is open to all bakeries, including in-store bakeries, craft bakeries and cafes.

BIANZ Executive Officer Belinda Jeursen says the competition was developed to promote and acknowledge excellence in New Zealand baking.

“We developed the competition to recognise and reward the good work being currently carried out by bakeries throughout New Zealand whether they are small or large, a café or a patisserie,” said Jeursen. “We want as many bakeries as possible to participate.”

The New Zealand Bakery of the Year competition will see the top ten New Zealand bakeries of the year rewarded for their skills at the BIANZ Conference in Auckland on 12 September. Nine of the top ten will be determined through judging points awarded by a panel of expert judges, and a special People’s Choice Award will be decided via public txt and online voting.

“We integrated the consumer element into the competition as we believe that customer feedback is vital to the ongoing progression of baking in New Zealand,” said Jeursen.

Customers will be encouraged to vote for their favourite bakery by txting a unique number, which will be allocated and then displayed in-store by each bakery, to BAKE (2253).

The competition judging will take place at the annual BIANZ Conference at The Hilton, Auckland on September 11th to 13th with winners being announced at the Awards Dinner on September 12th. Tickets to the Awards dinner can be purchased by calling 0800 NZ BAKE.

Registration for the competition closes on 16th July and products need to be submitted by 10th September. For registration forms, product and judging specifications and the People’s Choice txt and online leader board, visit www.bakeryoftheyear.co.nz or for more information call 0800 NZBAKE.
