The Return Season of the Hunting of the Snark

"hilarious, flippantly absurd comedy" - explore a world void of common sense

Coming up next at BATS, The Playground Collective boldly return in their quest to bring more nonsense to Wellington theatre stages. After their sold out first season in the NZ Comedy Festival, The Hunting of the Snark returns to BATS on 31 July – 4 August. Theatreview said they had "fresh creative energy", whilst the Lumiere Reader described it as "hilarious, flippantly absurd comedy".

The Hunting of the Snark is loosely based on Lewis Carroll's famous nonsense poem of the same name. A crew of absurd characters arrive on a strange island, hunting for an undefined… thing: 'The Snark'. A series of bizarre encounters and adventures follow throughout their quest.

They sought it with thimbles. They sought it with care. They pursued it with forks and hope They threatened its life with a railway share. They charmed it with smiles and soap.

The return season promises improved monster puppets (even though the first ones were "astoundingly and eerily good" according to the Capital Times), live musical accompaniment and nonsense poetry. The Playground Collective are busy polishing and refining the show in preparation for their second foray into the world of Snarks at BATS. The interpretation the Collective takes plays fast and loose with the original, drawing on the verse of Carroll's evocative poem, but adding pop culture references.

The Playground Collective has been set up to provide the next stepping stone for young actors, designers, and musicians who have been through the Young and Hungry festival at BATS theatre – or something like it – but are still just as hungry as ever.
