Father’s Day Rocks
The special day for Mothers usually results in a large retail spike in May, second only to the Christmas blitz. This past week though it was the paternal equivalent which drove sales.
And it's a mixed bag for Dad, as Welshman Paul Potts celebrates TransTasman chart toppers (he jumps to #1 in Australia this week) and doubles sales over last week here to lead for a fifth week.
Meanwhile The Traveling Wilburys move back up to #2 and are joined by The Police and The Eagles in the Top 5. On the Compilations Chart, Old Skool Of Rock moves to the top.
And if CD sales support is anything to go by, the All Blacks should go well in France. The LOOP label’s rugby hook-up All Blacks: The Music rockets straight in at #2.
All in all, a good week for Dads.

Exiles On Singles Street
Exile
was an American band whose song Kiss You All Over topped the Singles list for four weeks in 1978… but this isn’t them. New to the Singles Chart this week, The Exiles are Auckland-based Sean Sturm (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programs), Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper (vocals, violin, guitar, programs), Grahame Cope (drums, samples) and Colin Stanley (bass).
They’ve been together for the past three years and have been making their mark on the radio airwaves in recent weeks with The One. Now that’s translated into (digital) sales, helping them to #36 this week. It's currently #1 on Amplifier and Digirama.
The One has been the title of another (very different) Top 40 single. That was in 1992, and it peaked at #7 for Elton John.

The New Single
Sean Kingston makes it six weeks in a row for Beautiful Girls. But watch out Sean, Kanye West looks Stronger as he jumps 15 points to the runners-up slot and looks poised to gain his second penthouse dweller next week on the eve of his new album release.

The New Albums
#6 Ben Harper - Lifeline
Per capita, New Zealand would surely have to be Ben Harper's best market. He first came here when his 1996 Faded debut charted a full 15 months before his sophomore The Will To Live first charted in his homeland. That album became his first #1 here, 10 years back. Last time round Both Sides Of The Gun also topped the list and now the 38-year-old California native and his band the Innocent Criminals lay down their latest Lifeline. It was recorded in just seven days live to a 16-track tape machine in Paris. It takes top debut honours this week at #6 as Ben makes his 8th straight Top 10er here in eight releases.

#14 Dr Hook - Greatest Hooks
We love our Dr Hook! The band originally known as Dr Hook and the Medicine Show gain their fifth New Zealand hit album with their fourth hits compilation. Most think of the eye-patched Ray Sawyer as Dr Hook, however he shared lead vocal duties with Dennis Locomiere who toured here as a soloist a couple of years back. Singles wise they placed 14 tracks in our charts over the years including two #1s - 1972's Sylvia's Mother and 1980's Sexy Eyes. As for the other Best Ofs, Greatest Hits reached #3 in 1981, Completely Hooked was a #1 in 1992, and different Greatest Hits also made #1 2001.

#29 Paul Simon - The Essential Paul Simon
As half of Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon landed an even half dozen charting Best Ofs (including a couple of #1s) in our charts. This week it becomes an even half dozen solo hits compilations as The Essential Paul Simon enters the Albums list at #29. Paul's scored 11 solo hits here, including his sole solo chart-topper, 1973's Take Me To The Mardi Gras, all of which are included on the new set. Although six of his charting albums here are compilations, Paul's sole #1 album was the 1986 studio album Graceland.
