Celeste Oram Wins the Trusts Secondary Composers' Competition
Seventeen-year-old Celeste Oram is the winner of the 2007 The Trusts Secondary Composers' Competition run by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
Celeste, a student at Diocesan School for Girls in Auckland, was named the winner following a performance of her work titled Wenn die Dämmerung Verdammt Wird by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Marc Taddei.
Celeste wins a cash prize of $500 (donated by the Friends of the APO) and will have her piece - which translates as 'when the dawn is damned' - performed by the APO at its Discover New Zealand Music concert in May next year.
Celeste was one of eight finalists, all of whom had their works performed by the APO and recorded.
The competition was judged by Marc Taddei and the APO's Composer-in-residence, Gareth Farr, and Young Composer-in-Residence (and former winner of this competition), Karlo Margetic.
