New Zealand Red Cross deploy aid worker to flood affected Papua New Guinea

In the wake of flooding in Papua New Guinea over the past week New Zealand Red Cross has deployed aid worker Rosemarie North to the affected region to assist in a communications role.

Rosemarie will fly out to Papua New Guinea tomorrow morning at the request of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

In her position as a communications aid worker Rosemarie will be responsible for handling media requests while also supplying updated information on the situation in Papua New Guinea. 

The flooding in Papau New Guinea followed several days of heavy rain caused by tropical cyclone Guba.

In the most affected region of Oro Province in eastern Papua New Guinea thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes while the rains have also washed away roads and bridges.

In addition to the deployment of Rosemarie New Zealand Red Cross has also   facilitated a donation of $100,000 from NZAID, the government’s international aid agency, to assist with relief efforts.

The funds were used to provide relief supplies such as tarpaulins, water containers, cooking equipment and mosquito nets.
