NZ On Air has just announced funding for a highly original two-hour television special that will follow the fortunes of the finalists in the annual 48 Hours Film Festival.
“The 48 Hours Film Festival has become a huge event,” said NZ On Air chief executive Jane Wrightson. “There are more than 500 teams competing over a weekend to make short films. They only find out what genre their film has to be, the characters’ names and the expected line of dialogue just before the festival starts.”
Ms Wrightson said there was an interesting twist in the way the producers, Two Heads Ltd, will approach the finalist profiles that will make up the programme.
“This television special will profile each of the 10 finalists and portray them in the genre style of the film they drew out of the hat,” she said. “Those genres include superhero, western, martial arts and so on. We think it’s a marvellous idea, and we’re looking forward to seeing it on screen.
“The television special will showcase the top ten films and culminate in the live announcement of the overall winner,” she said.
The programme will show behind the scenes events, including interviews with competing filmmakers from around the country and a backgrounder explaining how the festival works.
The special will screen in prime time on music channel C4.
