Mana Land Lines is an exhibition of paintings presented as part of Solo 27 at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts. This exhibition represents Morag Stokes' response to a creative residency on Mana Island last year. The works challenge a comfortable viewing of landscape painting. Spaces are created which are incompatible with perspectival recession, and island materials sit proud of the surface offering non-illusionary representation of the island. In addition to paints made from sand, burnt and charred driftwood, cliff scrapings and river mud, some of the works contain the droppings of the very rare Takahe, a happy resident of Mana Island.
