Elam and Artstation host first Pacific Island and Māori artists' show

The George Fraser Gallery and Artstation are delighted to present The Conch is Calling, an inaugural exhibition showcasing emerging Māori and Pacific Island artists from Elam School of Fine Arts.

Cross-cultural influences are the central themes in this mixed-media exhibition that acknowledges both the art and the families and communities who provide support to the artists.

"The melodious sounds resonate and reverberate from the conch to signal a significant event, in this case Elam's first Pacific Island and Māori artists' show", says Mose Eteuati, artist and exhibition curator.

Works in the exhibition are divided between the two galleries, with a mix of photography, painting, sculpture, moving image and multi-media on show at each venue.

"This exhibition gives our students a chance to showcase their work to the public and provides an important link between tertiary studies and the art world," says Nuala Gregory, Head of Elam. "Elam has a number of talented Pacific Island and Māori student artists coming through the School so we hope an exhibition dedicated to their work will become an annual event."

Artists: Mose Eteuati, Ans Tonga, Paula Schaufhassen, Amanda Montgomerie, Mark Dewes, Wiremu Kawiti, Niu Lemalu, David Capisarow and Shannon Teao.

Join the artists at the George Fraser Gallery for a public talk on Saturday 8 November at 1pm.

Located in the grounds of Albert Park in Auckland's city centre, the George Fraser Gallery is the public exhibiting space of Elam School of Fine Arts.

The University of Auckland's National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries comprises the School of Architecture and Planning, Elam School of Fine Arts, the Centre for New Zealand Art Research and Discovery (CNZARD), the School of Music and the Dance Studies Programme.
