Countdown Begins Until David Reid Homes Buildathon

Media Release for immediate use: Wednesday 29 October 2008

Countdown Begins Until David Reid Homes Buildathon

In just over two weeks time David Reid Homes will build a three-bedroom home in 48 hours at the Royal New Zealand Show in Christchurch, with the net proceeds from its sale going to Cure Kids.

The Buildathon project is a huge undertaking but David Reid Homes (Canterbury) Managing Director Kendall Langston says things are well and truly on track.

“The final stages of planning are coming together well. We expect to have the permit issued by the end of the month and we have employed a project manager to oversee the project through to its completion. We have the appropriate health and safety plans in place and have accounted for all the variables, including the weather,” he says.

Kendall Langston says the whole team is committed to ensuring the Buildathon project is a success for Cure Kids.

“Building homes for Kiwi families is what we do best so we are delighted to be able to use our passion for building to help support such a worthy cause. We see the Buildathon as being an ideal way to give something back to the community,” he says.

“The three-bedroom home will make an ideal holiday home or farm cottage so we expect there to be plenty of interest at the auction and are confident we can raise lots of money for Cure Kids,” he added.

Cure Kids is an organisation dedicated to helping young New Zealanders with life- threatening illnesses. The money raised by Cure Kids funds ground-breaking research and in many cases offers children the only real hope to finding a cure for their conditions.

David Reid Homes began its link with Cure Kids in 2005 when it built a house in 24 hours during Wanakafest. This helped raise $179,000 for the charity.

Kendall Langston says they have been overwhelmed with the support received from the industry.

“So many local suppliers and contractors have come on-board to help us out with the project. Many of them aren’t charging for their time or materials. From the hardware to the paint and even the television aerial – everything has been donated or heavily discounted,” he says.

“We are delighted that everyone has been so enthusiastic about the project and we are all itching to get in the full swing of things and build a fantastic house for the auction,” he added.

The three-bedroom home will be built on 12 and 13 November 2008 at the Royal New Zealand Show in Christchurch. An open day will be held on 14 November followed by an auction.

David Reid Homes has committed to three Buildathon projects throughout New Zealand over the next six years to raise funds for Cure Kids.
