Tournament Honouring Golfing Legend Raises Over $50,000

Tournament Organisers have just announced more than $50,000 was raised in the Sir Bob Charles Hall of Fame Golf Tournament, which took place at Clearwater last Friday.

The tournament was held in recognition of Sir Bob’s induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Clearwater Club Captain Barry Johnston says the fundraising result was outstanding and it was the “icing on the cake” for what was a very successful tournament.

“The day far exceeded our expectations. Raising over $50,000 from the tournament is a fantastic result, considering the current economic climate. We owe a huge thanks to all the sponsors, those who participated in the tournament, and to those people who attended the dinner and auction,” he says.

Barry Johnston says the money raised from the event will be put towards the beautifying programme at Clearwater. A trust has been set up to administer the programme of which Sir Bob is a trustee.

A full field of 132 players participated in the tournament, including 88-year old Bob Glading. Bob was the winner of the 1947 and 1948 New Zealand Open and currently plays off an 11 handicap. Sir Bob also took part in the tournament and managed to shoot his age with a par round of 72, even though he was suffering from the flu.

Barry Johnston says there were a number of other memorable moments throughout the tournament.

“The tournament winner was Niven Boyle, a left-hander just like Sir Bob, who shot 41 stableford points,” he says.

“But we can’t forget Chris Plimmer’s sublime hole-in-one on the 9th hole. She holed her driver from the ladies tee, which was no easy feat playing into a strong easterly breeze.”
