Festival Of The Elements Off The Wall Art Textiles!

When art and fashion fuse with passion and creative flair the result is ‘Eco prints to Art Couture’ at Pataka. An inspired group of five local artists showcase their practice using natural dyed textiles at Bottle Creek Gallery from the Waitangi Day Festival of the Elements until 23 February.

Deb Donnelly, Whitireia textile design tutor, and textile applied arts degree students Billee Mutton, Olivia Giles, Cleo Thorpe Ngata, and Rachelle Toimata have produced exciting new work for the show inspired by natural colours and hand-crafted plant dyes.

This textile art has been shown in a 2008 Manila runway featuring New Zealand artists. The DVD of Manila runway will be shown at the Bottle Creek Gallery on Waitangi Day.

Deb Donnelly says “Changing attitudes towards textiles and wearable art as a ‘New Zealand’ creative activity have supported positive attempts to bring communities together. It can embed national identity as a concept free of traditional boundaries and encourage use of locally sourced recycled materials combined with hand-made textiles”.

Other wearable arts works toured internationally by the group can be viewed at Te Rauparaha Arena site and smaller limited edition works will also be for sale during the craft show in the Pataka spine on Waitangi Day.
