Bizarre breeding behaviours

Bizarre breeding behaviours

An adults-only Valentine’s Day event at ZEALANDIA. Saturday 14 February

For hihi, it’s all over in a matter of minutes, but tuatara take their time.

Thought you knew all about the birds and the bees? Well think again! Staff and volunteers at ZEALANDIA: The Karori Sanctuary Experience will be dishing the dirt on the bizarre breeding behaviours of some of our native animals as part of a special Valentine’s Day event at the award-winning conservation attraction.

‘Many of New Zealand’s native animals (and plants too!) have adopted extremely fascinating, complex ways of reproducing’ said marketing coordinator Alan Dicks.

‘Unfortunately, these bizarre breeding habits have often contributed to the species’ decline and are hampering recovery efforts.’

The kakapo is a perfect example: a slow and extremely fussy breeder, with a high occurrence of infertility. With less than 100 birds left, the Department of Conservation has had to resort to some extremely creative techniques to help with their survival. Former member of DOC’s Kakapo Recovery Team Emma Neill will be talking about some of the more quirky attempts they’ve made and how the breeding programme is going.

Victoria University biologist Dr. Dave Burton will give visitors a more global perspective, with his light-hearted look at 'how to have it off in 20 different species'.

ZEALANDIA is open 'til 8pm, so you and your loved one can linger a little longer and enjoy one of mainland New Zealand's most incredible dusk choruses. There will also be free boat rides all evening across the picturesque lower lake.
