Think you ‘nose’
it all? The call is out to find the most discerning
olfactory glands in New Zealand!
Teams of three are
being sought to test their sense of smell at DramFest 09’s
whisky nosing competition, to be held in Christchurch later
this month.
Entrants will have to guess the region,
distillery and age of five different whiskies – not as
easy as it sounds.
“Whisky is a very subtle
drink, with many many different flavours and tastes,” says
DramFest organiser Michael Fraser Milne. “But if you can
even pick up a few of these, you are in with a chance! You
don’t have to be an expert to enter.”
Teams
will be guided through the whiskies, and there will be
plenty of opportunities to increase whisky skills at the
festival before taking part in the competition. Over the
course of the festival there will be appreciation sessions
with some of the key whisky experts from Scotland, and there
will be around 150 to 200 whiskies available to
try.
Each team consists of three people, and costs
$30 to enter. Each member of the winning team gets to take
away a bottle of each whisky from the
competition.
A team led by Wayne Parks of Alaska
won the nosing competition last year. With five mystery
drams, his team correctly identified four regions, one
distillery and three ages correctly.
The festival
is organised by Michael Fraser Milne, owner of local
Christchurch whisky shop ‘Whisky Galore’. Stocking over
500 whiskies, the store opened in 2003 and is seriously
dedicated to all aspects of the whisky public’s
needs.
The festival will include tastings and
appreciation classes, a whisky cocktail demonstration and
sampling, a nosing/tasting competition and an evening
‘Whisky Do’.
