Church Service For Fire Victims

A special church service is to be held in Auckland’s Anglican Cathedral next Wednesday to pray for those confronted by the tragedy of the Australian bushfires.

The Cathedral Dean, The Very Reverend Ross Bay says the service is a chance for the city to respond to a tragedy that feels close to us. “Even at a distance from these events, the scale of devastation and loss of life leaves us with a sense of shock and grief. In the midst of this tragedy however, there are also tremendous symbols of love through the bravery and care of those who are helping combat this disaster. We want to invite people to the Cathedral to pray for hope and healing, and in doing so to express our solidarity with our Australian neighbours.”

“Several churches have been destroyed by the fires and clergy and church leaders are supporting the victims of the fire in different ways and so this is a way for the churches of Auckland to stand in support with the churches of Melbourne,” says Dean Bay.

A condolence book for people to leave messages in has been opened in Holy Trinity Cathedral and will be sent to the Archbishop of Melbourne as a sign of support.

The service will be held on Wednesday 18th February at 6pm in Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell, Auckland. A collection will be taken at the service and given to the Red Cross Appeal.
