Free tattoos as body
art meets fine art at Newtown gallery
Suite in
Newtown, Wellington will hold a tattooing extravaganza in
their gallery on Monday 9 March 2009.
TVNZ has commissioned artist Wayne Youle to orchestrate an art work for an upcoming episode of New Artland. Wayne's idea for his commission Where You Stay? follows on from his recent focus on New Zealand identity and the concept of turangawaewae, which while specifically related to Maori is a universal idea.
From 9am on Monday 9 March 2009, 100 people will be tattooed with a 125mm tall/long black outline map of Aotearoa. Each recipient will also have the opportunity to have as many small red dots as they like put on the map to signify places of importance to them - their turangawaewae. Leading tattoo artists Tommy Downs and Ra Kopu will draw the tattoos.
There is no charge for the tattooing but people will need a golden ticket to take part.
