Feature CD / Lawrence Arabia – Chant Darling. Win It Next Week

Lawrence Arabia’s new album Chant Darling features the musical contributions of James Dansey & Daniel Ward (The Sneaks), Matt Eccles (Betchadupa), Liam Finn, Luke Buda & Sam Scott (The Phoenix Foundation), Tom Watson (Cassette), Andy Watts (Hot Grits), John White (Mestar) and various other friends. It was recorded between Nov. 2007 & Jan. 2009, in Stockholm, London, Auckland, Wellington and Port Chalmers and was produced by Milne himself.
The songs for the album were penned half and half between NZ and London, where Lawrence has been based for the past two years. The subject matter varies from the NZ space programme to naughty liaisons on Quay Street, from laziness and drinking problems amongst the shy, to sexually frustrated hipsters, drug-induced death visions, lust for teacher and a theme-in-waiting for the National Government's soon to be announced war on drugs. WIN To Chant Darling all next week at 8.15am on Breakfast.

NATURAL SELECTION – Jon Spencer w/ Oscar. This Sunday 15th March, 6 – 8pm on Radio One

After a long and semi-successful tenure as leader of scuzz-rock heroes Pussy Galore, Jon Spencer took his anti-rock vision and hooked up with guitarist Judah Bauer and drummer Russell Simins to create the skronk-blues trio the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Postmodern to the core, this is an ironic name; little of what this band plays resembles standard blues. There is, however, a blues feel to what they play, meaning that in many instances they appropriate aspects of the blues (very often clichés) and incorporate them into their anarchic, noisy sound. Not part of alternarock's commercial establishment, Spencer also managed to sharply divide critics who tended to see him as either inspired showman or mendacious con man (frankly, he's both). The Jon Spencer Natural Selection with Oscar. Sunday, 6 - 8pm, only on Radio One.
