Street Football joins Culture Kicks

Street Football Aotearoa players are set to take part in Wellington City Council’s Culture Kicks football tournament this weekend at Martin Luckie park in Berhampore.

Members of the NZ Homeless World Cup team, which competed in Melbourne last November, will take part.

Team organiser Katie Owen says, “The tournament provides a great chance for the team to get some practice amongst quality opposition. We’ll be mixing it with some very skillful teams that can teach us a thing or two so it’ll be a really good learning opportunity.”

The tournament is Wellington’s own version of the football world cup. Over 40 teams have registered representing places as diverse as Afghanistan and Assyria.

A real festival atmosphere is planned with food stalls, face painting, push play and a bouncy castle for kids and music and entertainment for the adults. Wellington Phoenix players are also expected to appear at the tournament.

The football festival promotes the spirit of unity and fair play. A high standard of behaviour is expected including respect for other players, officials and referees.

The half hour games begin at 10am and go all day with the final scheduled to start between 5 and 6pm.
