Blood of a Poet
Polish-born artist, film-maker, poet, and stage director Lech Majewski will delve deep into his video art pieces when he speaks at Christchurch Art Gallery next week.
Majewski will discuss and show video excerpts from his highly-acclaimed video art installation Blood of a Poet, which was later fashioned into the feature film Glass Lips. He may also touch on his current work-in-progress – a feature film about sixteenth-century painter Pieter Bruegel – along with other works such as The Garden of Earthly Delights and Basquiat.
In a presentation that is expected to appeal to the general public and artists alike, Majewski will examine both the past and future directions of his art.
Majewski was honoured in 2006 with a full retrospective of his film work at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the highlight of which was the world premiere of Blood of a Poet. The installation was later included in the 52nd Venice Biennale and exhibited at many major international galleries.
Majewski is in Christchurch for a Canterbury Fellow Residency at the University of Canterbury’s Department of Theatre and Film Studies. This residency includes the presentation of a series of lectures on the hidden language of symbols in art.
• Wednesday, 1 April, 7.30–9pm, free, Philip Carter Family Auditorium.
