Ski shop supports elite winter competition
 
One of New Zealand’s longest-established ski shops with a passion for the snowsports industry has stepped up to support an elite international winter competition.

Browns Ski Shop, established in Queenstown in 1980 and in Auckland in 2007, has proudly announced its sponsorship of the Winter Games NZ, to be held in Otago from August 21 to 30.

Browns co-owner Kris Vermeir said Browns was “absolutely thrilled” to support the biggest winter sports event outside the Winter Olympics as the event’s official ski retailer.

“It’s being held right here, right on our doorstep, and it’s going to attract elite athletes from all around the world,” he said.

“As long-term supporters of snowsports and aspiring young athletes, of course we jumped at the chance to be involved and to help the Winter Games NZ committee stage an event that will focus worldwide attention on Queenstown in the build up to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada.

“The Winter Games will give those athletes an invaluable training opportunity and this is our chance to show them the services and facilities we’ve got on offer here and why they should return to the Southern Lakes year in, year out.”

Winter Games NZ chief executive Arthur Klap said support for the event had come from all quarters, with strong levels of sponsorship from Queenstown and Wanaka.

“We’re delighted to welcome Browns on board and know that they’ll bring their 9 years’ of expertise to visiting athletes, teams and their supporters.
“Our athletes couldn’t be in better hands.”

Winter Games NZ will take place at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Snow Farm, Naseby and Dunedin from 22-30 August 2009 and will feature alpine skiing, free skiing, x-country skiing, snowboarding, curling, ice skating and adaptive snow sports as well as the demonstration sports of winter triathlon and natural luge.

Around 800 athletes are expected to compete.
